Biofairnet - XIV IAERE Annual Conference 2026

BIOFAIRNET at IAERE 2026: Driving Fair, Data‑Led Transitions in the Bio‑Circular Economy

BIOFAIRNET is pleased to report on its successful participation in the XIV IAERE Annual Conference, held on 12–13 February 2026 at the Department of Economics and Management (DEM), University of Trento (Unitn), Italy.

The IAERE Annual Conference is one of Europe’s leading academic events dedicated to environmental and resource economics, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working at the intersection of sustainability, economics, and public policy. The 2026 edition provided a high-level platform for dialogue on the economic dimensions of climate action, circularity, and sustainable resource management.

Special Session 2.9: BIOFAIRNET

On 12 February 2026, BIOFAIRNET hosted a dedicated Special Session (Session 2.9) within the conference programme. The session attracted strong interest and fostered constructive discussion on how economic analysis, stakeholder engagement, and digital innovation can accelerate the transition of greenhouse-gas-intensive sectors towards sustainable and circular models.

During the session, the consortium presented:

  • The BIOFAIRNET vision of building a fair, inclusive, and accessible network for the bioeconomy and circular economy.
  • The role of economic evidence and policy analysis in shaping just and effective transitions.
  • The BIOFAIRNET digital dashboard and its co-creation approach with stakeholders.
  • Opportunities for collaboration with researchers, policymakers, and sector representatives.
Biofairnet - XIV IAERE Annual Conference 2026

Participation in the XIV IAERE Annual Conference confirmed the relevance of BIOFAIRNET’s mission to bridge economic research and territorial action. Discussions emphasised the importance of integrating data-driven tools, stakeholder engagement, and policy insights to ensure that transitions in agriculture and mining are not only technically feasible, but also economically viable and socially fair.

BIOFAIRNET thanks the organisers of IAERE and the University of Trento for hosting a well-organised and intellectually stimulating conference. The project looks forward to continuing collaboration with the research community and building new partnerships that contribute to a sustainable and equitable bio-circular economy.

On 28 May 2026, as part of the eighth edition of the National Bioeconomy Day promoted by the SPRING Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster with Assobiotec-Federchimica, BioFairNet ran an online workshop titled “Assessing sustainability in emerging bio-based value chains.” Held from 10:00 to 12:00 CET, the session was delivered by project partners UNITELMA Sapienza and the University of Ferrara. It centred on Environmental and Social Life Cycle Assessment (LCA and S-LCA), showing how these methods quantify environmental and social impacts, expose trade-offs, and identify where bio-based systems can realistically be improved across value chains and regional contexts.
On 14–15 May 2026, the BioFairNet project took part in the “Renaissance in Economics” International Conference, held in Rome. The event focused on how economic thinking can respond to today’s global challenges, including climate transition and social inequalities.
