The BIOFAIRNET project exemplifies European collaboration by bringing together a diverse network of experts and organisations to drive the transition of agriculture and mining— two greenhouse gas (GHG)-intensive sectors — towards a sustainable, bio-circular economy.
Focusing on digital cooperation, stakeholder engagement, and co-creation, BIOFAIRNET integrates innovative technologies and circular economy principles to enhance environmental performance, foster resource efficiency, and support local value creation.
By connecting European projects, research institutions, industry actors, and regional stakeholders, the BIOFAIRNET project aims to accelerate the green transition, reduce the environmental footprint of key sectors, and promote inclusive, knowledge-driven solutions across Europe.
BIO2REG Project
ENABLING REGIONS TO TRANSITION TOWARDS BIOECONOMY
The BIO2REG project is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative closely aligned with the objectives of the BIOFAIRNET project. While BIOFAIRNET focuses on supporting GHG-intensive sectors such as agriculture and mining through a digitally enabled bio-circular transition, BIO2REG specifically addresses the regional dimension of this transformation.
The transition to a circular bioeconomy (defined as an economy that leverages renewable biological resources and innovative technologies to produce food, materials, and energy) holds significant potential to foster structural change. It can promote sustainable growth, job creation, ecosystem restoration, circularity, and context-specific innovation. However, regional stakeholders often lack the frameworks, practical tools, and financial mechanisms necessary to initiate and manage such transitions effectively.
In this context, BIO2REG aims to support regions with historically carbon-intensive economies (including those dependent on coal mining, intensive agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and peat production) in navigating the complex path towards sustainability. These regions often face multiple challenges such as economic disruption, rising unemployment, and social inequalities.
Project Mission
The core mission of BIO2REG is to enable the systemic transformation of GHG-intensive regions into bioeconomy model regions. Over a three-year period, the project brings together nine European partners committed to designing and delivering tangible measures that support the bioeconomic transition at the regional level.
BIO2REG partners are working collaboratively to:
- Develop a normative and conceptual framework for defining and enabling bioeconomy model regions, with a focus on regional specificities and systemic change;
- Provide transferable knowledge, strategic guidance, and raise awareness on how to implement circular bioeconomy principles through interregional coordination;
- Foster the exchange of experiences, best practices, and challenges among regional stakeholders across Europe and associated countries;
- Contribute to reducing disparities in regional development by strengthening stakeholder capacity and promoting inclusive transformation pathways.
Key Objectives
By placing regions at the centre of the bioeconomy transition, BIO2REG complements the work of BIOFAIRNET and reinforces the broader European ambition of achieving climate neutrality, socio-economic resilience, and sustainability across sectors and territories.
