BIOFAIRNET at the FAO Global Agrifood Biotechnologies Conference 2025

Rome, Italy – 16–18 June 2025

As part of its 80th Anniversary celebrations, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened the Global Agrifood Biotechnologies Conference at its headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 16 to 18 June 2025. The event, held under the theme “Biotechnologies for a Sustainable Future: Driving Agrifood Systems Transformation,”brought together international experts, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to explore the pivotal role of biotechnologies in shaping more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agrifood systems.

The BIOFAIRNET project, funded under Horizon Europe, was proud to take part in this landmark event, represented by project partner UNITELMA. Building on BIOFAIRNET’s mission to support greenhouse gas-intensive sectors such as agriculture and mining in their transition to a bio-circular economy, UNITELMA actively contributed to discussions on how biotechnology can drive sustainable practices, foster stakeholder engagement, and deliver meaningful change across regions.

The conference underscored the urgency of accelerating agrifood system transformation in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With biotechnologies positioned as a critical enabler, sessions highlighted both high-tech innovations—such as genome editing and synthetic biology—and low-tech solutions that can empower small-scale producers.
