The Biofairnet project was present at the 9th Environmental Conference of Macedonia (EcoMacedonia 2025). Project partner CERTH (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas) represented the project and contributed to the scientific programme through a poster presentation delivered by researcher Lefteris Melas. The event brought together researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and environmental experts to discuss pressing challenges and innovative solutions in sustainability and environmental management.
As a key partner in the project, CERTH is responsible for Pilot Site 1 in Lesvos and leads activities related to sustainability assessment, making its participation particularly relevant in showcasing Biofairnet’s progress.
During the conference, Biofairnet presented its work through a poster focusing on Case Study Area 1: Lesvos Island, emphasizing the island’s potential for sustainable bioenergy development.
Highlighting Bioenergy Opportunities in Lesvos
The poster presented a comprehensive assessment of by-products generated along the olive oil value chain, one of the most important agricultural activities in Lesvos. By quantifying these residues, the study illustrated their potential as valuable feedstock for bioenergy production, supporting circular economy practices and reducing environmental impacts.
In addition, the poster featured an overview of Lesvos Island’s electricity grid mix, providing important context for understanding how locally produced bioenergy could contribute to the island’s energy transition. The analysis demonstrated how integrating bioenergy solutions could enhance energy resilience, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support regional sustainability goals.

Engaging with the Environmental Research Community
Participation in the conference provided an excellent opportunity for the Biofairnet team, through CERTH, to engage with a wide network of experts and stakeholders. The poster presentation by Lefteris Melas facilitated discussions on practical pathways for implementing bioenergy systems in island contexts and highlighted the importance of leveraging local resources.
The event also allowed the project to increase its visibility, disseminate early findings, and gather valuable feedback that will support ongoing research activities.
