Biofairnet - EU Day in Engineering at the University of Bayreuth

BIOFAIRNET contributes to the organisation of the 5th EU Day in Engineering at the University of Bayreuth

On 15 April 2026, BIOFAIRNET took part in the organisation of the 5th EU Day of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bayreuth. The event, held under the theme “Europe in my region”, brought together European-funded initiatives, researchers and institutional representatives to highlight how EU collaboration drives innovation, sustainability and regional development across multiple fields.

BIOFAIRNET, together with several other European projects active within the faculty, contributed to shaping the programme of the day. The event showcased the diversity of EU-supported research in areas such as circular economy, bioeconomy, digitalisation, advanced materials and resource efficiency. It also provided a platform for discussing how European cooperation supports regional transitions toward greener and more resilient systems.

BIOFAIRNET presented by the University of Bayreuth

As a project partner, the University of Bayreuth presented BIOFAIRNET through Kilian Nölscher, from the Department of Engineering Design & CAD. His presentation introduced the aims of the Bioeconomy and Circular Economy Fair Network, highlighting the project’s commitment to supporting fair, transparent and datadriven transitions in regions undergoing environmental and economic change.

During the presentation, he also outlined the university’s leading role in the development of the project’s Green Information Factory and the AIbased digital platform. These components form the core of BIOFAIRNET’s digital infrastructure, designed to help local stakeholders understand, monitor and guide a just and green transition. The work includes creating open and accessible tools for data collection, analytics, simulation and decision support, ensuring that communities and regional actors can benefit from advanced digital capabilities regardless of their technical starting point.

Networking and collaboration

Following the presentations, the EU Day continued with a networking session, offering participants the opportunity to connect with other projects, explore potential collaborations and exchange perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of the circular and biobased transition. For BIOFAIRNET, this session provided a valuable space to strengthen partnerships, identify new synergies and increase the project’s visibility within the European research community.

On 25 June (11:00–11:45 CET), BioFairNet invites stakeholders to join a dynamic hybrid event exploring how bioeconomy and circular approaches can drive Europe’s sustainable transition.
On 28 May 2026, as part of the eighth edition of the National Bioeconomy Day promoted by the SPRING Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster with Assobiotec-Federchimica, BioFairNet ran an online workshop titled “Assessing sustainability in emerging bio-based value chains.” Held from 10:00 to 12:00 CET, the session was delivered by project partners UNITELMA Sapienza and the University of Ferrara. It centred on Environmental and Social Life Cycle Assessment (LCA and S-LCA), showing how these methods quantify environmental and social impacts, expose trade-offs, and identify where bio-based systems can realistically be improved across value chains and regional contexts.
On 14–15 May 2026, the BioFairNet project took part in the “Renaissance in Economics” International Conference, held in Rome. The event focused on how economic thinking can respond to today’s global challenges, including climate transition and social inequalities.
